DONNA’S CORNER: Easter Sunday “It Is Finished”

So Cecile B. DeMille may have had Charlton Heston parting the Red Sea, but we had the Holy Spirit / Smoke rolling out of the tomb and the band rocking the house! There may have been thousands of Hebrews as bit players in the Ten Commandants, but we had a full house, top to bottom! And as Moses purported to be a man of few words, we have Eric, who self admits to nonstop talking, who is going to lead us into the next phase of the Missiongathering – Christian Church story.
And as Moses was standing on Holy Ground by the burning bush, our very own Eric was figuratively and spiritually being burned at the stake by his colleagues when he shared his journey of who he really was. Tested by peers and unknown at the time, by God, Eric eventually became the man we saw today. He shared a very moving and personal journey and I invite you to check out the podcast on the church website to hear the whole sermon. He told a joke, a good one, something about a horse. My lips are sealed. You will have to listen to the podcast to hear the whole joke. Here are some nuggets from my notes.
Today was the last in our series of “Famous Last Words”. “It Is Finished”. Eric shared the Greek word “Testelestai” which means to end, complete, execute and discharge (a debt). This word was used three ways in Jesus time:
1. Servant to Master – Task is done!
2. Merchant to Lender – Debt is paid – nothing left.
3. Priest to animal sacrifice – the animal was worthy to be sacrificed.
While on that cross, Jesus saw Sunday. It is Finished. Testelestai.
Philippians 1:6 … being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
God calls us to get our hands dirty.
It’s not about today, it’s about the other 6 days.
We are the hands and feet of Jesus.
On that Friday night, the curtain was torn. There would be no more separation between us and God. God and creation are one. What once was separated is now back together.
It is finished.
No separation.
All are welcome.
We come here on Sunday to get pumped up then the mission starts.
A church of the least of these.
Jesus loves you then, now and forever.

  1. This brief recap is appropriately accurate, encapsulating Pastor Eric’s ideas. As you said, Donna, that man has a way with words, and only the podcast can present his full message with all its nuances and digressions. We appreciate your giving us these refreshers.
